Regardless of where you live—anywhere within the United States that is—odds are, you have to have a fishing license. When there’s so many fish out there that they’re literally jumping in the boat well, that sort of thing has to be regulated and limited, doesn’t it?
If you’re a senior citizen, perhaps not. Many states don’t require that senior citizens—those of us over 65 years of age—obtain a fishing license. That doesn’t mean all states, however, so it’s important to check your state’s laws before you grab your rod and reel.
Getting a fishing license over 70, depending on your state, will probably be discounted at the very least. Sometimes it is free altogether if you’re lucky. For instance, the state of Florida will issue a fishing license for free to any resident over the age of 65.
Even California, which has one of the most expensive fishing licenses in the country, reduces the cost from $52.66 per resident to $7.98 for senior residents (which includes those who are trying to get a fishing license over 70).
How To Find Out Fishing License Requirements In My State
The best way to find out how much a fishing license will cost as a senior resident or non-resident, its best to visit your local hunting and fishing center in person or online. You can also use the term, “fishing license near me” in the Google search bar.
Here on HowToTroutFish.com, we have an entire section dedicated to getting licensed in every state. Find your state here.
Another great option here is this broad overview of all fifty states and the costs associated with a fishing license. For short-term, long-term, seniors, children, residents, and non-residents, you can always check in here for a quick reference.
It’s important to check and make sure that it’s needed and that you obtain one, even if it’s for the short-term, such as a one-day or a three-day license. Local game and wildlife officers can be pretty strict if you’re caught without one, regardless of your age.
When we say strict, we mean confiscating your entire setup and possibly even your boat if you’re out on the water.
What Age To Qualify For A Senior Fishing License?
The grand old age of 65 is the qualifier for all fifty states. If you’re over 65, you shouldn’t have a problem purchasing a fishing license. However, 32 states offer some version of a lifetime fishing license once you’re over the age of 60. Only a few states have flat fees for a certain age milestone.
- Oklahoma: $225 over 60
- California: $370.50 over 62
- Georgia: Free
- New Hampshire: Free
Be sure to check out your state and see what qualifier you fall under.
